I’ve not read it, but it sounds like a good idea.
What is so great about this book?

Whereas empiricism is a false way of knowing that leads to false knowledge, and
whereas science is the study of what we fondly conceive as independently existing objects,
should we encourage men to study medicine or any other "scientific" field?

The Retreat June 10, 2006

We are considering having a retreat on January 12-14 19-21 out in Granite Falls.
We have been invited, and Todd, along with the people there, is keen so far. So this is what we would like to do:
- The bashes leading up to the retreat will have a common theme, the metaphysical poets.
- For each bash the person responsible will prepare a 5 page paper to read and also lead the discussion of a poem.
- For the retreat we will all read T. S. Eliot's The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry and come prepared to discuss it on the first evening.
- The next day each one assigned will read a 10 page paper on each poet, Crashaw, Donne, Marvell, Traherne, Vaughan and Herbert. Then we will have questions and discussion after each one.
Some books you might try to get:
George Herbert and the Seventeenth-Century Religious Poets: Authoritative Texts Criticism
- Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company (September 1978)
- Language: English
- ISBN: 0393092542
John Donne's Poetry: Authoritative Texts, Criticism
- Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company; 2nd edition (November 1991)
- Language: English
- ISBN: 0393960625

O Gravitas! How if we talk about some of our favorite books?
What if we made a list of our favorite books first, and then posted one from the list at intervals, asking what is so great about this book?

Entitled, “The Temple of Sacred Poems,” sent to a
Gentlewoman.
KNOW you, fair, on what you look ?
Divinest love lies in this book,
Expecting fire from your eyes,
To kindle this His sacrifice.
When your hands untie these strings,
Think you've an angel by the wings ;
One that gladly will be nigh
To wait upon each morning sigh,
To flutter in the balmy air
Of your well-perfumèd prayer.
These white plumes of His He'll lend you,
Which every day to heaven will send you ;
To take acquaintance of the sphere,
And all the smooth-faced kindred there.
And though Herbert's name do owe
These devotions, fairest, know
That while I lay them on the shrine
Of your white hand, they are mine.
