The bash of Saturday, August 26th August 21, 2006
Posted by Ryan Martin in Notices.9 comments
Here is the menu assignments for this weekend’s bash, being held at the Ryan Martin homestea
d:
- Martin : hamburgers
- Whites : dessert
- Everybody else : a side of some sort (Hearty side, pasta salad, lettuce salad, fruit salad, chips and salsa, chips and dip, any other side dish that strikes your fancy.)
If you have not been to a bash in a couple months (or ever) and plan on coming, please send an email to ryanjaredmartin@gmail.com; sending an email would also be a good way of asking for directions. In addition to the Ben Nelson’s discussion of John Donne, we may show (depending upon time and interest) a clip from a John Eliot Gardiner Bach cantata DVD and briefly discuss it.
Owen Barfield, Saving the Appearances August 17, 2006

Awright folks, time to put some zip into this.
Here’s a book, and no mistake. Here’s a chap what knew Lewis and what wrote stories for the Tolkien children. Here’s a chap what knows how to think, he does. Here is a chap who was friendly with Lukacs also, Lukacs who says wonderful things so similar about the uselessness of the subject/object distinction and how knowledge is participatory and personal. Wonderful Lukacs, wonderful Barfield.
Here is a book about the idolatry of nominalism, showing how silly it is for science to believe that our collective representations are strictly objects, how we have forgotten that we participate in the world we inhabit, and how other times had different collective repesentations. Here’s a book to set your epistemology tingling all over.
Not a book for idle perusal.
What else is great about this book?

Well, as reluctant as I am to bring closure to the discussion of Mere Christianity, it really is time to move on.
What about William Law, eh? What is so great about this book?
